Scope and Content Buildings adjacent to west block, Home Farm, Gordon Castle, Moray, from west Gordon Castle Home Farm, near Fochabers was built for the 4th Duke of Gordon as part of a major programme of building which transformed Gordon Castle into a palace. John Baxter, an Edinburgh architect, was commissioned to carry out the work which was completed between 1769 and 1783. This shows part of the steading, originally built to house the duke's stables and carriage house, but now altered for modern farm use, mainly as a cow byre. The battlements on the elegant, Georgian building behind were designed to match those on the redesigned castle nearby. John Baxter enjoyed the patronage of the 4th Duke of Gordon throughout his career until his death in 1798. John Baxter succeeded his father, also called John, a master builder who built several Scottish country houses including Haddo House, designed by William Adam, between 1731 and 1735.
