Scope and Content West block, Home Farm, Gordon Castle, Moray, from north Gordon Castle Home Farm, just outside Fochabers, housed the former stables and carriage house of the Dukes of Gordon. Built for the 4th duke, the steading was designed by John Baxter of Edinburgh who rebuilt Gordon Castle between 1769 and 1783, transforming it into a castle fit for a duke. This shows the sophisticated design of this steading, the architecture of which mirrors that of the castle itself with battlements above and arched windows below. 18th-century agricultural improvements led to the development of model farm buildings with, occasionally, some very elaborate architectural styles. John Baxter was a highly successful architect but suffered from recurrent financial problems and ill health. By his death in 1798, Baxter had carried out many commissions for the 4th duke, such as the planned burgh of Fochabers and the local parish church of Bellie, arguably his finest work.
