Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Port of Ness Harbour, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty This harbour was created from a much smaller facility in 1893-94 to serve the growing local fishing fleet. It is formed by two massive concrete breakwater piers, the longer of which forms an inner basin, and the shorter protects the entrance. This view shows the outer breakwater pier. This was added after the longer pier was completed, in the light of experience of using the harbour. The ruined end can be seen. This harbour was built with Government assistance at a time when there was much public concern about the crofting economy. The success of the fishery it served was short-lived, and it survives as a colossal monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
