Scope and Content Port of Ness Harbour, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty This harbour was created from a much smaller facility in 1893-94 to serve the growing local fishing fleet. It is formed by two massive concrete breakwater piers, the longer of which forms an inner basin, and the shorter protects the entrance. This view shows the inner basin, divided by the intermediate pier seen in the foreground. The massive character of the works was necessitated by the exposed location. Note the silting of the far end of the basin. This harbour was built with Government assistance at a time when there was much public concern about the crofting economy. The success of the fishery it served was short-lived, and it survives as a colossal monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
