Scope and Content Aerial view of the New Town, Edinburgh In 1767 James Craig devised a simple plan for Edinburgh's New Town - three principal parallel streets with a square at each end - which made ideal use of the site, with its main axis, George Street, lying along a natural ridge. Single-sided terraces, Princes Street (right) and Queen Street (left), face south and north respectively. Between them, the grand central thoroughfare, George Street, links two great squares: St Andrew in the east and Charlotte in the west (foreground). Part of James Craig' plan was that two churches, St Andrew's and St George's, should face each other along George Street from the far sides of their respective squares. The house of Sir Lawrence Dundas was built on the proposed site of St Andrew's church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
