Scope and Content Waterloo Place, Edinburgh Waterloo Place, the bridge from the New Town to Calton Hill, was begun in 1815 to a design by the architect, Archibald Elliot, although the idea of extending Princes Street to the east originated in 1790. The builder was Peter Lorimer. The twin porticos with Ionic columns, one on each side of the street, form a frame for the view of Calton Hill from Princes Street. All along the bridge, the buildings form palace fronts on each side of the street. Waterloo Place, like the North Bridge and the South Bridge before it, spanned a valley of low ground to allow the city of Edinburgh to expand to the east. It crossed the ravine of the Low Calton, an old route from Edinburgh to the port of Leith. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
