Scope and Content Sketch of Waterloo Place, Edinburgh, showing the Regent Bridge under construction Waterloo Place, the bridge from the New Town to Calton Hill, was begun in 1815 to a design by the architect, Archibald Elliot, although the idea of extending Princes Street to the east originated in 1790. The builder was Peter Lorimer. Regent Bridge was built as a viaduct over the Low Calton ravine. Until the building of Waterloo Place, the east end of Princes Street was terminated by Robert Adam's Register House (right) and the old Theatre Royal (left) in Shakespeare Square. Regent Bridge was usable in 1819, but in 1820, the builder, Peter Lorimer, complained that he was unable to sell his new buildings because the roadway was littered with building materials, sheds and rubbish dug from the foundations.
