Scope and Content Aerial view of Waverley Station, Edinburgh Waverley Station was designed by James Bell, chief engineer for the North British Railway, in 1868-74 to replace an earlier station on the same site. At the time of opening, its 13-acre glass roof was one of the largest in the world. The whole area of Waverley Station's 12 lines of through track and three wide platforms is covered with fully glazed transverse valley roofs. The large building that surrounds the domed Booking Hall was built beneath the span of the North Bridge. There were originally three termini at Waverley Station, operated by the North British, and the Edinburgh and Glasgow railways. In 1868-74, the North British, having absorbed the other companies, re-organised the station to a plan designed by James Bell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
