Scope and Content Plaque commemorating Sir Walter Scott at Nos 39-43 Castle Street, Edinburgh Nos 39-43 Castle Street, built in 1793 by Edinburgh stone masons, Robert Wright and James McKain, is a double bow-fronted tenement, one of six in the street. The southern of the two main door houses, No 39, was the home of Sir Walter Scott from 1802-26. This plaque is set into the sill course below the centre window of the first floor bay of No 39. The first floor of the building is defined by the continuation of the sill course of its windows, without interruption, across the front of the tenement. Sir Walter Scott, a hugely popular author in his day, spent his earnings on building Abbotsford, his house in the Borders. In 1825, his publishing firm failed, and over the next seven years he repaid his debt of over £100,000 by writing prodigiously. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
