Scope and Content National Gallery of Scotland, The Mound, Edinburgh The National Gallery, designed by William Playfair for the Board of Manufactures, opened in 1859. The majority of paintings and sculptures in its distinguished collection are English and European works ranging from the 16th century to the present day. The gallery is cross-shaped with double Ionic porticos to north and south, and a six-column portico on each side of the higher transverse section. The pilasters along each side are completely plain, and there is virtually no ornamentation on the building. The double Ionic porticos to north and south reflect the fact that the building was originally shared by two users: it had to accommodate the National Gallery in the west range of galleries, and the Royal Scottish Academy in the east range.
