Scope and Content Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh, looking south from Hanover Street The Royal Scottish Academy was designed by William Playfair in 1822-6 for the Board of Manufactures and Fisheries to accommodate the Royal Society, the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The building was altered and enlarged by Playfair in 1831-6, who increased its length, added two-column projecting porticos at each corner, and enriched the whole design. A massive seated statue of Queen Victoria was added over the north portico in 1844. The Royal Scottish Academy, established in 1826 to encourage the fine arts in Scotland, has presented an annual exhibition of painting and sculpture by its members every year since 1827, and mounts special exhibitions during the Edinburgh Festival.
