Scope and Content David Livingstone Monument, East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh East Princes Street Gardens, on the east side of the Mound, were formed by the draining of the Nor' Loch in the 1760s. The gardens were landscaped in 1830, and later rearranged after the railway line to Glasgow was driven right through in 1847. The monument to David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is in bronze by the sculptor, Amelia Robertson Paton (Mrs David Octavius Hill). Amelia Robertson Paton (1802-1904) was the second wife of David Octavius Hill, painter and photographer. Other examples of her work in Edinburgh include statues on the Scott Monument, and a bronze bust of her husband at his grave in Dean Cemetery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
