Scope and Content Frontage at No 139 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. This tall early Victorian shop front, with circular gratings below the windows, was altered when it became the offices of the American Express Company. The earliest conversions of the ground floors of houses into shops retained the basement area. The next stage was to pave over the area, lowering the ground floor of the house to the same level, and thus producing a very lofty shop. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
