Scope and Content Clarendon Hotel, No 104 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. This elaborate building, with three storeys and a mansard roof, was designed by Sir William Hamilton Beattie in 1875-6 as the Clarendon Hotel. Sir William Hamilton Beattie (1840-98), had by 1895, when he completed the North British Hotel on the south side of Princes Street, designed more hotels than any other British architect then living.
