Scope and Content National Bank building, now the Royal Bank of Scotland, No 142 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. The National Bank, now the Royal Bank of Scotland, was remodelled in 1888 by John McLachlan as an elegant miniature palace. The two entrance porches are supported by Corinthian columns, which are continued as part of the ground-floor façade. The National Bank was established in 1825. In a merger in 1959 with the Commercial Bank, it formed the National Commercial Bank of Scotland, which, in turn, became part of the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1969.
