Scope and Content Nos 137-144 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. Vestiges of the original 18th-century houses can be seen above the ground-floor shops at Nos 138 and 139 (right), and No 144 (left). No 142, (middle, left), an example of the Victorian reconstruction phase, was remodelled in 1888 for the National Bank. Princes Street was originally a long row of rather plain residential terraced houses, usually of three main storeys in height, built over basements. The street was never very pretentious, and by 1821 many shops had opened on the ground floors of houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
