Scope and Content Former electric generating station, Rodel, Harris, Inverness-shire This small station was built to serve a wartime army camp in the vicinity. It was a small building, rubble-built, with a corrugated iron roof, and contained a small water-turbine driving a generator, with a standby diesel-powered generating set. This view shows the diesel generating set, with a vertical single Blackstone engine driving a Higgs Motors generator. The heavy flywheels evened out the power strokes of the single cylinder. The tank behind was for cooling the engine. The use of masonry was unusual in World War II, and it is possible that this station was built within the shell of a former water-powered corn mill.
