Scope and Content Nos 128-131 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. No 128 (right) was designed by Peddie and Kinnear for the University Club in 1866. Vestiges of the original 18th century Georgian houses can be seen above the shop fronts of Nos 129-131. The original 18th-century Princes Street houses were very plain and usually of three or four storeys in height with sunk basements. Nos 129 and 131 were unusual in having Ionic pilastered-fronts.
