Scope and Content New Club building, No 85 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Club, Edinburgh's most prestigious club, was formed in 1787 and met in the hired rooms of a tavern in Shakespeare Square at the east end of Princes Street. It moved to its first purpose-built premises in Princes Street in 1837. This rather sober palace-fronted building was designed by William Burn in 1834 for the new premises of the club in Princes Street, and was later extended by David Bryce in 1859. It was replaced, as part of a reconstruction scheme, in 1966. One of David Bryce's massive urns from the roofline has been installed as a decorative feature in the 1966 New Club building. The oak dining-room panelling, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1912, has also been reused from the old club. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
