Scope and Content Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, from the south Princes Street, the southern street of James Craig's New Town, was built as a long row of plain terraced houses on the north side, with their own pleasure gardens on the south side, and splendid views over to the Castle and the Old Town. The gardens, designed by James Skene with Robert Stevenson as engineer, run from the Scott Monument to the west end of Princes Street. Originally laid out by Princes Street proprietors for their own private use, they became public gardens in the 1870s. The garden area was originally 'a filthy and offensive bog' which was drained, planned and planted by residents on the other side of the street. The gardens were for their own private use, with access by keys, until the street became less residential. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
