Scope and Content Late 19th century view of Princes Street, Edinburgh, looking eastwards Princes Street, the southern street of James Craig's New Town, was built as a long row of plain terraced houses on the north side, with their own pleasure gardens on the south side, and splendid views over to the Castle and the Old Town. By the end of the 19th century, many of the original Georgian houses had been replaced by impressive Victorian hotel and department store buildings. The memorial to Sir Walter Scott (right), designed by George Meikle Kemp, was installed in 1846. Although they attracted 'a good class of resident', the Princes Street houses were not comparable with those of George Street or Queen Street. From 1821 shops had appeared, and by the late 19th century the big hotels and department stores had moved in. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
