Scope and Content Ceiling in vestibule at No 64 Queen Street, Edinburgh No 64 Queen Street, built in 1790 for Francis, 7th Earl of Wemyss, was, like Baron Orde's house at No 8 Queen Street and Sir Laurence Dundas' mansion in St Andrew Square, one of the grandest houses in the New Town. The ceiling of the vestibule has a geometric pattern, an octagon, inside a circle. The crossed weapons are a typical motif of the Robert Adam period. Inset in the walls are six oval panels bearing Classical figures in relief. The entrance to the house opens into a vestibule, which, in most Queen Street houses was cramped and dark but at No 64 is exceptionally spacious. It has a fireplace and a doorway at the inner end which leads to the hall and staircase. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
