Scope and Content No 64 Queen Street, Edinburgh No 64 Queen Street, built in 1790 for Francis, 7th Earl of Wemyss, was, like Baron Orde's house at No 8 Queen Street and Sir Lawrence Dundas' mansion in St Andrew Square, one of the grandest houses in the New Town. Wider than its neighbours, its frontage is only exceeded by that at No 8. It has four windows on each floor, proportioned to suit their position, with those on the first and second floors guarded by balconets. The entrance has a fanlight and side-lights. Baron Orde's house at No 8, designed by Robert Adam, set a standard for the rest. In the late 1700s James Boswell wrote 'This respectable English judge will long be remembered in Scotland where he built an elegant house and lived in it magnificently'.
