Scope and Content Fireplace, No 66 Queen Street, Edinburgh Nos 66 and 67 Queen Street, built in 1791 and 1792 respectively, are an elegant pair of townhouses with exceptional details and fine interiors. They now form one ownership, with direct internal communication. This painted pine mantelpiece is enriched in stucco and has an inlay of coloured marble. The vertical ribbed decoration is typical of simple fire surrounds from the 1770s onward. Georgian fireplaces were made in marble, stone or wood, and enriched with medallions and Classical motifs. They often had inlays of different marbles, and over-mantel mirrors. Fanned papers were arranged in the hearth when the fire was not lit. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
