Scope and Content Royal College of Physicians, Nos 9-10 Queen Street, Edinburgh Drawing of the front elevation The Royal College of Physicians, designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1844, was built on the former site of a house in Queen Street acquired by the college in the previous year, after their old hall in George Street was demolished in 1843. This drawing shows the building without its three statues. Its Neo-Classical front is simple and symmetrical, with a central doorway framed by a four-columned portico. A pedimented portico frames the centre window on the first floor. The Royal College of Physicians, founded in 1681, did much to make Edinburgh one of the great centres of medical education in the world in the 18th century. The Fellows originally met in a hall in Surgeons' Square, near the University. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
