Scope and Content Thistle Street, Edinburgh, looking west Thistle Street, like its sister Rose Street to the south, was originally built in the 1770s to house workers and shopkeepers, but many of its houses were bought by merchants, professional people and even a few landed gentlemen. Most of these rubble-built houses were constructed by 1781 before a two-storey limit was introduced. The three-storeyed houses continue to the west end of the street, each row of tenements neatly terminated by lane entries. Some shops appeared after 1819. In 1781 regulations were applied to buildings in the New Town: 'houses in Thistle Street shall not exceed two storeys, exclusive of the sunk and garret storeys, and the height of the side-walls from floor of sunk storey shall not exceed 33 feet (9.9m).'
