Scope and Content Nos 1 and 2 Thistle Court, Thistle Street, Edinburgh Thistle Street, like its sister Rose Street to the south, was originally built in the 1770s to house workers and shopkeepers, but many of its houses were bought by merchants, professional people and even a few landed gentlemen. Thistle Court, on the south side of the street, is the earliest example of New Town architecture. Built in 1768, these two small semi-detached but very respectable houses are rubble walled, with slate-hung dormer windows in the roof. John Young (d.1801), builder, was given a 'consideration' of £20 by Town Council to build the first house in the New Town in 1767. It still stands in Thistle Court, and is a modest building with no hint of the architectural splendour that was to follow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
