Scope and Content Guardian Royal Exchange Insurance Building, No 13 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh The Guardian Royal Exchange Insurance building, designed by Leslie Grahame-Thomson and Frank J Connell for the Caledonian Insurance Company in 1938-40, occupies the south corner site of George Street and St Andrew Square. The building, faced with near-white granite over a black arcaded base, has a Scandinavian theme, with its set-back tiled roof. The entrance, with the ground floor planned on its diagonal axis, is flanked by columns bearing bronze figures. The Caledonian Insurance Company, Scotland's oldest insurance company, was based at No 19 George Street until 1935, the George Hotel occupying the upper floors of the building. Its magnificent square domed business hall is now the restaurant of the hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
