Scope and Content Bank of Scotland building, No 38-9, east side of St Andrew Square, Edinburgh The Bank of Scotland building was designed by David Bryce in 1846 for the British Linen Bank to replace its former head office at No 37. The building is in the grandest possible style, and built on a colossal scale. Above the ground floor are six projecting Corinthian columns which rise to the roofline, each supporting a statue. The first-floor windows are pedimented, and a frieze decorated with cupids and flowers runs the width of the building. The six statues in front of the balustrade are all carved by A Handyside Ritchie and represent Navigation, Commerce, Manufacture, Science, Art and Agriculture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
