Scope and Content Detail of fanlight at No 112 George Street, Edinburgh George Street was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. As the grand central thoroughfare of James Craig's New Town in 1767, it was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. No 112, built in 1790 by James Hill and Alexander Porteous, has a doorpiece with the original fanlight. In the late 18th century, the casing of the street door was modified by the fanlight. Early in the period, fanlights were generally simple and rectangular, but the semicircular or segmental type became increasingly fashionable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
