Scope and Content Bank of Scotland building, 62-66 George Street, Edinburgh The Bank of Scotland building was designed by David Bryce in 1874 as the Edinburgh head office of the Glasgow-based Union Bank. It was finished after his death in May 1876 by his nephew, John Bryce. The carvings on the Italianate front are by John Rhind. The ground floor has three Ionic porches, with Corinthian detail above, and a panelled and bracketed cornice. The Bank of Scotland, founded in 1695, is the oldest of Scotland's three surviving banks. Its Edinburgh head office on the Mound was re-designed by David Bryce in 1864 in an Italianate style in keeping with its imposing position. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
