Scope and Content View of Calton Hill, Edinburgh Calton Hill has long been a popular place for the people of Edinburgh, as may be seen in this view. It gives good views over the city, especially, as may be seen here, over the Old Town and Arthur's Seat. Nelson's Monument stands prominently in the drawing. It was built in 1816 and designed as an upturned telescope. Originally it incorporated a time signal on its summit, for the ships at sea. To the left of Nelson's Monument stands the National Monument, designed as a memorial to the Napoleonic Wars. It was intended to be a replica of the Parthenon, but the finances ran out after only twelve columns were built and it has remained unfinished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
