Scope and Content West Bow, Edinburgh The West Bow ran from the Castle Hill down to the Grassmarket, but it was mostly demolished in 1829 when Victoria Street was cut across it to run up from the Grassmarket to George IV Bridge. The view here shows the old houses of the West Bow before alteration. The west (right) side of the street has now gone, but the houses on the east (left) may still be seen today. The picture also shows one of the town wells at the top of the West Bow. From these water could be taken to individual homes. The water was drawn from outside of the city and piped to the main cistern on Castle Hill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
