Tarbert Harbour General view of quayside

SC 463826

Description Tarbert Harbour General view of quayside

Date 11/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 463826

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tarbert Harbour, Loch Fyne, Argyll This is a fine natural harbour, improved from the early 19th century by the construction of quays which served the fishing fleet and steamboat traffic. In the later 19th century it was a noted centre for the ring-net Loch Fyne herring fishing. This view shows wooden seine-net fishing boats moored to one of the early 19th century quays. Tarbert remains a significant fishing port, though the number of vessels using it is much reduced from its heyday, when it was crammed with Loch Fyne skiffs, the distinctive half-decked vessels used by ring-net fishermen.
