Scope and Content Pier buildings, Ardrishaig Harbour, Argyll The harbour at Ardrishaig was built as an entrance to the Crinan Canal, but from 1814 was also used by steamships. This building was built to collect pier dues from passengers landing from or embarking on steamers using the pier. This view shows the pier side of the building. The double doors had turnstiles behind them to control the flow of passengers, which at busy times could number many hundreds on a single steamer. Ardrishaig was the terminus of a mail steamer service from Glasgow (later from Gourock) which did not end until the 1960s. This building has effectively been disused since then.
