Scope and Content Cairnbaan Locks, Crinan Canal, Argyll The Crinan Canal was designed by John Rennie. This flight of four locks took vessels on the canal up to the summit level from the east. As with all the other locks on the canal, they were operated manually, using balance beams. This view shows the top lock of the flight, from the west. The distance between the gates indicates the large size of the locks. The Crinan Canal was intended to provide a safe route across the top of the Kintyre peninsula for the small sailing vessels which carried on the trade of the Clyde estuary and western Highlands, avoiding the dangerous Mull of Kintyre.
