Scope and Content Swing bridge, Bellanoch, Crinan Canal, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built as a ship canal between 1794 and 1809, to designs by John Rennie. This hand-operated swing bridge was built in the 1870s to replace an earlier structure. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The light wrought-iron span is pivoted on the far side of the canal, and is swung by turning a windlass at that end. The Crinan was built to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre, a dangerous one in the days of sail. It is now used mainly by yachts. This bridge was replaced by a modern steel structure in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
