Scope and Content Entrance to Crinan Canal, Crinan, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built as a ship canal between 1794 and 1809, to designs by John Rennie. The original entrance locks were both replaced in 1930-34 by larger ones. At Crinan the entrance lock gave access to a large basin. This view shows the seafront at Crinan. The concrete piers forming the 1930-34 entrance are nearest to the viewpoint, an the far side of the original lock is marked by the lighthouse. The pier on the left replaces one used by steamers to Oban. The Crinan was built to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre, a dangerous one in the days of sail. It is now used mainly by yachts, though Crinan Basin is used by fishing boats, and is a base for the VIC 32, a puffer converted to carry passengers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
