Scope and Content Bridge-keeper's house, Oakfield Bridge, Crinan Canal, Lochgilphead, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built as a ship canal between 1794 and 1809, to designs by John Rennie. This house appears to have been built for the opening of the canal, though the bridge it served was replaced in 1871. This view shows the house from the road from Lochgilphead to Ardrishaig. The canal is at first-floor level. The basement was built as a store. The Crinan was built to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre, a dangerous one in the days of sail. It is now used mainly by yachts. The wharf at Oakfield Bridge was used by vessels trading with Lochgilphead. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
