Scope and Content Entrance lock Crinan Canal, Ardrishaig, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built as a ship canal between 1794 and 1809, to designs by John Rennie. A new entrance lock was built at Ardrishaig in 1930-32, which can be entered at any stage of the tide. This view shows one of the wooden lock gates, with the balance beam to open and close it to the right. The lock chamber is concrete. Note the seaweed growing on the lower part of the gate. The Crinan was built to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre, a dangerous one in the days of sail. It is now used mainly by yachts. The gates of the sea lock have since 1976 been replaced by hydraulically operated steel ones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
