Scope and Content Argyll Furnace, Furnace, Loch Fyne, Argyll This was a charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting blast furnace, built by the Argyle Furnace Co to use charcoal made from the local scrub woodland. It was one of five charcoal furnaces built in the highlands in the 18th century. This view shows the furnace from the north east. The corrugated-iron-roofed structure was the casting house, and contained the sand-bed into which the molten iron was run. The furnace proper is the massive battered structure to the left. The furnace closed in 1812, during a trade depression. It was the second-last charcoal furnace to operate in Scotland, the last being Bonawe. This furnace is complete with its lining, unlike that at Bonawe. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
