Boddam, Fishing Station View of winch and boat

SC 463726

Description Boddam, Fishing Station View of winch and boat

Date 8/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 463726

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Fishing station, Bodam, Shetland This was a typical small beach fishing station, on the shores of a bay protected by reefs acting as natural breakwaters. It had two winches for hauling boats up the beach, one wooden-framed, the other converted from a domestic mangle. This view shows the winch which was adapted from a mangle, with a double-ended open boat of typical Shetland construction. The boats operating from this station were probably the property of crofter-fishermen. They were fishing for lobsters and crabs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
