Scope and Content Croft House Museum, Southvoe, Shetland This museum was created in the 1970s from the buildings of a 19th century croft. These consist of a house and steading range, with a corn-drying kiln and barn, and three horizontal mills, one completely restored and another re-roofed. This view shows the lowest of the three mills in the museum, with on the right the stream that powered it. A spare top stone is propped up against the gable. The hole at the base of the wall gave access to the horizontal waterwheel (tirl). This type of mill, with its horizontal waterwheel driving directly the top stone of the millstones, was very generally used in Shetland, where subsistence farming was general, and the timber needed for vertical mills was scarce.
