Description Gutcher, Pier View from SE

Date 7/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 463587

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Pier, Gutcher, Yell, Shetland This is a substantial masonry pier, built for use by steamers, but also providing shelter for a small-boat haven. This view shows the pier from the end of the modern ferry pier, Note the small boats in the harbour, and the shop and warehouse at the pier head. Until the Shetland County Council introduced a vehicular ferry service linking mainland Shetland to Yell and Unst, these islands were among those served by a conventional steamer service from Lerwick, which used this pier.
