Scope and Content Esha Ness Lighthouse, Shetland This lighthouse was designed by D Alan Stevenson for the Northern Lighthouse Board. It was the second last major manned light built for the Board. This view shows the lighthouse from the south west, Note the square tower, a pattern adopted as an economy measure after the First World War. The shuttered windows of the keepers' houses show that the lighthouse had been de-manned. this was one of the earliest of the Board's lighthouses to be converted to automatic operation.
