Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Jain Laidlaw, Lasswade Churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates Jain Laidlaw, the wife of a local wright, who died in 1739, aged 49. In the upper panel are the Three Fates, alluding to birth, life and death. Beneath, a pair of angels robe a winged cherub, symbolising the heavenward ascent of Jain's soul. The skull and 'Memento Mori' (Remember You Must Die) scroll signify mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
