Lerwick, The Lodberrie View from ESE showing ESE front

SC 461445

Description Lerwick, The Lodberrie View from ESE showing ESE front

Date 4/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461445

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lodberrie, Lerwick, Shetland This is a self-contained complex of merchant's house, warehouse, quay boat-slip and boat shelter, beside the harbour of Lerwick. It is similar in character to the private quays in Stromness, Orkney, but does not have an open quay. This view shows the complex from the seaward side, with the house in the centre, and the boat shelter in front of it, with a Shetland double-ended boat in one compartment. The warehouse is on the right with its crane visible above the roof. This merchant' trading post dates from the period when sea-borne trade was conducted in small sailing craft, often belonging to individual merchants, and when trade goods were handled in small quantities.
