Fladdabister, Limekilns View from N showing N front of S limekiln

SC 461357

Description Fladdabister, Limekilns View from N showing N front of S limekiln

Date 4/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461357

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Limekilns, Fladdabister, Shetland These two limekilns are of a type peculiar to Shetland, circular in plan, and loaded and discharged from the top. These examples have openings round the base, but they are small, and supply air for combustion. This view shows one of the kilns from above, giving an impression of the small scale of these structures. One of the air-holes can be seen to the right of the grassy ramp. There are other kilns of this type at Okraquoy, nearby, and at Lunna, much further north. They must all have burned lime mainly for agricultural purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
