Scope and Content Limekilns, Fladdabister, Shetland These two limekilns are of a type peculiar to Shetland, circular in plan, and loaded and discharged from the top. These examples have openings round the base, but they are small, and supply air for combustion. This view shows the two kilns on top of a rocky outcrop, looking like prehistoric monuments. They are built of drystone rubble. There are other kilns of this type at Okraquoy, nearby, and at Lunna, much further north. They must all have burned lime mainly for agricultural purposes.
