Description Sanday, Kettletoft, Storehouse View from NW showing WNW front and NNE front of storehouse with capstan in foreground

Date 3/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461284

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Warehouse/storehouse by pier, Kettletoft, Sanday, Orkney This warehouse is at the landward end of the pier through which the trade of Sanday was conducted until roll-on roll-off ferries were introduced in the 1980s. It is a two-storey, nine-bay building. This view shows the building from the east. It appears to have been built in two sections, the older probably on the right, As can be seen, in 1976 it accommodated a shop and filling station. The two arched openings are unusual. The building looks as though it was built to serve the trade of the island, storing goods in transit, acting as a shop, and housing carts and carriages run in connection with the shipping services using the pier.
